Music Appreciation (X-MA1)

This class sparks musical interest by learning musical components through live music experiences. Students will have the opportunity to watch 3 live musical performances per term and study musical aspects relating to the performances. For example, a violin player will come to class and perform a selection of music/pieces. Curriculum is then created to highlight awareness around the instrument(s), orchestration, the musician(s), the history of the instrument and genre, styles of music the instrument may be used in and learn a song that relates to the time period/style. Each participant will be inspired to explore music of each style, have a greater appreciation of what is to be a musician and to appreciate music.

Objectives/skills: increased musical awareness, music history, cultural appreciation, ability to identify various instruments, increased knowledge of musical styles, hands on musical experience, identify basic note values, learn the basics for reading music (based on focus such as, western, east Indian, African etc), rhythmic exploration, dynamics, introduction to time signatures, tempo, introduction to and contesting music notation, appreciation for mood evoked, scales, differing tones, tone, harmony, melody, soundtracks, storytelling, expand auditory skills and how to be a respectful audience.
